What BajsRoute is

BajsRoute is a free Android app for cycling navigation across the City of Zagreb. It was built to offer safer, more practical and more pleasant routes to everyone who rides a bike – whether as daily transport, for recreation, or to get to know the city.

The app uses the City of Zagreb's official open data on cycling infrastructure and combines it with modern mapping and navigation, letting you find the best route between any two points in Zagreb while giving priority to the existing cycling network.

Key features

A map of the cycling infrastructure – a clear view of every bike path, lane and track in the City of Zagreb, based on open geospatial data from the ZG Geoportal.

Route planning and navigation – the best cycling route between your start and destination, calculated through the GraphHopper routing service, with the route drawn on the map and turn-by-turn directions as you ride.

Public bike stations and parking – locations of the Bajs public bike-share stations, including the number of bikes currently available, and of public bicycle parking.

Ratings for individual sections – registered users can rate individual sections of the bike network, building a collective picture of infrastructure quality from the perspective of the people who use it every day.

Reporting infrastructure problems – users can report problems they come across (damage, obstacles, poor signage), which makes maintenance easier to track and plan.

Local data, no network needed for the basic view – the cycling infrastructure data is stored locally on your device, so the map works even without an internet connection.

BajsRoute is built on the following publicly available datasets:

Use of the City of Zagreb datasets listed above was approved in writing by the City of Zagreb (April 2026), stating that the data carries no usage restrictions or licence. The OpenStreetMap base map is used under the ODbL licence. More information is available on the City of Zagreb open data page (in Croatian). Live bike availability is fetched from the public GBFS feed of the Bajs system with the operator's permission. The operator does not guarantee the feed's continued availability; if it is unavailable, the app shows station locations without bike counts.

BajsRoute is an independent project by BInspired and is not an official app of the Bajs system. Data on Bajs stations is used with the operator's permission.

Who is behind BajsRoute

BajsRoute was developed as part of a co-financed project carried out by BInspired, obrt za usluge, Glavinićeva 7, 51000 Rijeka, Croatia.

BInspired, owned by Marina Grandić, develops digital tools for public-data transparency and for involving citizens in the work of their local community. The company's previous project – ZagrebViz ("Transparency at your fingertips") – is an interactive visualisation of the City of Zagreb budget aimed at citizens, journalists and researchers, completed and published in 2025.

The BajsRoute app was developed by Lovel Kukuljan, a data scientist and software developer with experience in processing, analysing and visualising spatial, climate and other data. Lovel designed the entire system architecture – from the Android app and the map interface to the Firebase backend and the admin panel – and built the GIS data pipeline that integrates the City of Zagreb's open spatial data.
