BajsRoute is a free Android app for cycling navigation across the City of Zagreb. It shows the existing cycling infrastructure on an interactive map, lets you plan a route and navigate it, and gives you the option to rate sections of the network and report infrastructure problems.

The app covers the City of Zagreb only. The map of cycling infrastructure and the navigation work within the city boundaries.

BajsRoute is completely free. No hidden costs, no subscriptions, no ads.

The app is available for Android devices through the Google Play Store. An iOS version is not currently planned.

Once you pick a start and a destination, the app calculates a route using the GraphHopper cycling routing service. The route prefers existing bike paths wherever possible. As you ride, the app shows the route and turn-by-turn directions on screen.

When planning a route the app shows up to three suggestions: the recommended route (red) and up to two alternatives (orange and yellow), which you select by tapping the map or the route list. An alternative is only offered when a meaningfully different way actually exists – one that does not share most of its path with the recommended route and is not substantially longer. On short trips within a few city blocks such a path usually does not exist, so only one route is shown. Alternative routes may be slightly longer, but sometimes offer a larger share of riding on bike paths – the percentage is shown next to each route.

The routes are for information only. The app uses the available cycling infrastructure data to calculate the best route, but it cannot guarantee conditions on the ground at any given moment. Always ride carefully and follow traffic rules, regardless of what the app recommends.

BajsRoute was designed for Zagreb because it is built on the open geospatial data published by the City of Zagreb. Expanding to other cities would require integrating additional data sources.

The map and the cycling infrastructure are available without an internet connection, because the data is stored locally on your device. However, route calculation and navigation do need an active connection, because the route is calculated through an external service.

After signing in with your Google account, select a section on the map and give it a rating from 1 to 5. Your rating contributes to the average rating that all users can see.

After signing in, select the problematic section on the map and use the report option. You can choose the type of problem (damaged surface, obstacle, poor signage and so on), add a comment and set the severity.

Ratings and reports are public content in the App. Each section shows its average rating, and tapping it opens the list of individual ratings – the number of stars, the comment you left with the rating, and the date. The same applies to problem reports: the problem type, the comment and the date are visible to every user on that section. Every rating and report is shown with the nickname of the user who left it, as set in their profile – you choose your own nickname and can change it at any time. If that user has since deleted their account, a deleted-account marker is shown instead. The e-mail address and the rest of the account details are never shown. The one exception is a photo attached to a problem report – it is not publicly available and is seen only by authorised system administrators, who triage the reports and pass them on to the responsible city services. The comment is public, so do not put anything in it by which you could be identified.

When you delete your user account, your ratings, comments and reports stay in the App, but they are no longer connected to you – from that moment they carry only a deleted-account marker. That way the rating of a section and the recorded problems remain useful to other cyclists and to the city services, which may already have been sent the report. If you want your content removed as well, write to info@bajsroute.info and we will delete it. Use the same address to have an individual rating or report corrected.

No. The map, the cycling infrastructure and the navigation are available without registering. Signing in with a Google account is only needed to rate sections and report problems.

Yes. The service is intended for people over 16, in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provisions on processing the personal data of minors.

The app accesses your location (with your permission) to calculate routes and show your position on the map. Your location is not tracked continuously and is not stored on a server. If you sign in, your name, e-mail and user identifier from your Google account are stored, along with the ratings and reports you submit. All the details are set out in the Privacy Policy.

Send a request to delete your account and all associated data to info@bajsroute.info with the subject "Request – account deletion". We will act on it within 30 days.

No. The app accesses your location only while it is active on screen, and only if you have granted permission. There is no background tracking, no profiling and no data collection for marketing purposes.

Data on bike paths, Bajs public bike-share stations and public bicycle parking is taken from the ZG Geoportal – the City of Zagreb's official platform for open spatial data. The base map comes from the OpenStreetMap project.

The app synchronises with the sources periodically. Even so, conditions on the ground can differ from what is shown – a new path may not yet be in the Geoportal, or an existing one may be temporarily closed for works. If you spot a discrepancy, report it through the app.

Check that GPS is turned on and that the app has permission to access your location (Device settings → Apps → BajsRoute → Permissions → Location).
